A survey for the purpose of obtaining insurance cover for a vessel. As a rule, insurance companies will insist power boats and yachts over approx. 20 years old will require a full and current survey prior to accepting a particular vessel for insurance. The underwriter is interested in knowing about any physical aspect of the yacht that could cause it to suffer loss, together with a realistic assessment of value taking age, condition and type into account. What will be inspected during this survey? There are lots of variables but as an example the following will be inspected: Hull and deck structure, external and internal structure, bulkheads, framing and reinforcements, chainplates, keel/ballast, skin fittings and through hulls, ground tackle, stanchions, hand rails, jackstays, masts, spars and rigging (from deck level only), gas installations, fuel installations, fire fighting equipment, Bilge pumping, machinery (not necessarily in operation although fluid samples may be taken to assess condition) Note: The list above is not necessarily exhaustive, nor will the inspection include all of the above.
