Damage surveys are usually commissioned by an insurance underwriter or insurance company claims manager to determine cause and factual information relating to damage or even loss of a vessel. During a damage survey, so far as is possible, the facts will be established to determine cause and nature of the loss, and therefore allowing the underwriter to decide whether or not the damage is an insured peril under the terms of the policy. Providing the insured vessel is covered by the policy the likelihood is that repair work will be authorised. This second stage, 'supervision of repair works' will probably be overseen by the surveyor ensuring that it is done to a satisfactory standard and within reasonable cost. Although the majority of damage surveys will follow instruction from an underwriter, equally they may be commissioned by a private individual.
